Rudolf Steiner also characterizes these powers of thought as antipathy powers, and the powers of will as sympathy powers. He tries to explain that a human being, in so far as he employs his will powers, in fact merges with the world. Suppressing this process, developing feelings of antipathy, will result in real human consciousness. Only when these powers of sympathy and antipathy are firmly balanced—kept in check by the ego—is real human life made possible.
